Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Australia's border closure measures have played a significant role in controlling the spread of the virus, but this has created challenges for international students' studies and their post-graduation work in Australia.

In addition to being unable to return to Australia, the issue of post-study work visas has also attracted widespread attention. At a joint media conference this week, Education Minister Dan Tehan and Immigration Minister Alan Tudge, on behalf of the Morrison government, announced five new policies regarding student visas:

1. The government will resume issuing student visas to applicants outside Australia. This means that when the borders reopen, these students will already have their visas and can immediately arrange their travel plans.

2. If international students are unable to complete their studies within the validity period of their original visa due to the impact of COVID-19, they will be able to renew their student visas for free.

3. The time spent studying online outside Australia by student visa holders affected by COVID-19 will be counted as time spent studying in Australia, and graduates who meet the conditions can apply for a post-study work visa as usual.

4. Graduates holding a student visa who are unable to return to Australia due to COVID-19 can apply for a post-study work visa from outside Australia.

5. Applicants will be given additional time to provide English test results if the corresponding services are interrupted due to COVID-19.

This announcement of policies has finally put many students who have been 'stuck overseas' taking online classes and delayed studies at ease.

For prospective new students, this is also great news. With the resumption of visa issuance, students planning to start in S1 2021 can also prepare and enter the learning state!

In addition, for students who want to start their formal studies as soon as the borders reopen, TAFE Queensland has specially launched the following online language courses:

  • Direct Entry Program (EAP)
  • General English (Upper-Intermediate)

Online learning can enjoy a special price of $220 per week, and registration fees are waived!

The courses will be taught online via Zoom.

In addition, as a consideration to help students adapt to the environment, get to know their classmates, and enter the learning state before formal classes, students who complete the language course online overseas can also receive 3 weeks of free IELTS classes when they arrive at school!
